Trail Assistance Program

Help When your time on the trail Doesn't Go as Planned.

The Trail Assistance Program (TAP) is a LOVE Foundation initiative that helps trail users

reach a safe location when a mechanical breakdown, equipment failure, dangerous

weather, family emergency, or other qualifying non-medical safety issue prevents

them from safely continuing their journey.

Need Help?

Text “HELP” to (804) 557-0505 or click below

Medical emergency? Call 911. TAP is not an ambulance, EMS service, medical transportation service, or substitute for 911.

How TAP Can Help

TAP may provide non-medical assistance and transportation when a trail user cannot safely continue because of:

  • Mechanical Breakdown

  • Equipment Failure

  • Dangerous Weather

  • Family Emergency

  • Other Qualifying Non-Medical Safety Issue

TAP currently serves the Virginia Capital Trail and approved nearby routes. Assistance is based on eligibility and the availability of transportation, funding, and program resources.

Help Sponsor a Safe Ride

The Trail Assistance Program provides free emergency transportation for trail users who become stranded or are unable to safely continue their journey.

Your donation helps cover the vehicle mileage required to dispatch assistance, reach the trail user, and transport the individual—and, when applicable, their bicycle or other approved equipment—to a safe location. Every $3 donated helps fund approximately one mile of trail-assistance response and transportation.

  • Trail Guardian — $30
Helps fund approximately 10 miles of assistance.

  • Community Safety Sponsor — $75
Helps fund approximately 25 miles of assistance.

  • Trail Champion — $156
Helps fund approximately 52 miles of assistance.

Every contribution helps us respond when trail users need support and keeps emergency assistance available at no cost to the individual that needs help.

Want to make an even greater impact? Become a TAP sponsor and help support trail safety throughout the season.

Building a Safer Trail Community

TAP is more than transportation. Our long-term vision is to build a stronger trail-assistance network through community partnerships, safety equipment, volunteer resources, education, and new ways of reaching trail users when help is needed.

Future goals include dedicated trail-assistance kits, collaboration with local first responders where appropriate, and a rapid-response e-bike capable of providing non-medical assistance in areas where vehicle access is limited.
